What compels a web surfer or a person reading their email, to click a link?
Can a link BE ugly or pretty?
The answer is yes.
I've always wondered why the people who bought private label shopping cart URLs didn't rename them after they saw what the links looked like.
Ted Ciuba's private label cart is called AutoPilotRiches.com. Now this is a great URL for the make money from home, MLM, biz-op crowd, but if you are marketing to, say, pet owners, and your link for more information about organic pet treats is http://www.autopilotriches.com/affid=?1234567 doesn't that look like you are going to be SOLD SOMETHING?
While there don't appear to be any testing studies done on this - common sense tells you that if that link was http://www.OrganicPetTreats/YummyForTheTummy - it would get clicked more. Don't you agree?
Ugly Link: http://www.autopilotriches.com/affid=?1234567
Pretty Link: http://www.OrganicPetTreats/YummyForTheTummy
To create a pretty link with Easy Link Manager you simply login to the ELM page on your site - give your link a name like PetChews - Affiliate - Yummy Treats Page (this field is just for you) - then paste your UGLY link into the URL box - and then just enter a / and a folder name for your pretty link!
REMEMBER:
Everything before the .com .net .org etc, technical name = TLD (top level domain) is NON-CASE SENSITIVE!
That is why you can put www.YummyPetTreats.com or www.yummypettreats.com and either one works fine to get to the site.
BUT… everything AFTER the TLD IS case sensitive!
That means that if you name your folder OrganicPetTreats.com/YummyTreats, if someone types it in lower case - they will get an error.
So if they type in OrganicPetTreats.com/yummytreats - and you've created the foldername /YummyTreats - they will get an error.
If they type in organicpettreats.com/YummyTreats - it WILL work, because they stuff before the .com (TLD) is not case sensitive.
So…
This is small potatoes when someone is just clicking a link - but if you plan on saying your URL on an interview, or if you have a chance to give it out at a party or live speech - you really should forget using Title Case in the foldername.
WORKAROUND: Want an Easy Solution to his baffling problem? Just make two URLS in your Easy Link Manager control panel! It takes like 20 seconds to make another link while you are in there and is totally safe with the system.
Make your first one /YummyTreats and then create a second one with the same name, put the same Ugly Link in the 2nd box and then type /yummytreats in the 3rd box.
VOILA!
You have totally covered your fanny on the whole case sensitive url thing.
Who could you send a link to this page - who would benefit from reading all about this whole case sensitive thing?
