Eating Crow About Twitter

twitter-squeeze OK… OK… I admit it. I may have been wrong about Twitter.

A couple of weeks ago I wrote a post titled “Twitter Could Make You Stupid(er)”. In it I posted Lisa Nova’s You Tube video “Twitter Whore” (Hilarious) and basically said that Twitter is stupid and has no real value.

While I still don’t get the appeal that it has for some people to sit around and tell the world every little detail of their life, there is no denying that there is some serious web site traffic to be gained from using good Twitter strategies. (My 4th largest traffic source for the last 2 months.)

My friend Rick Butts has developed a system using Twitter to grow a huge list of loyal followers. He has put it into a new training he calls “Twitter Squeeze“.

If you’re at all familiar with Internet Marketing then you’ve most likely heard of the “Name Squeeze” page. It is quite possibly the best web conversion strategy ever created. Well, Twitter Squeeze is to Web 2.0 marketing what the Name Squeeze page is to email marketing.

I’ve been following Rick’s strategies since the early days of the “AdSense Gold Rush”. They have made me a lot of money over the years. (Can you say Blog ‘n Ping?) So, whenever he comes out with something new I always listen up.

The Internet is a constantly changing world. If your online business is going to succeed then you have to be ready and willing to change with it. The current wave is quick, yet genuine social interaction. This little strategy can help you catch that wave and grow your online business in the process.

Admittedly, this strategy may not be right for every online business but it could be just right for you.

You be the judge: Twitter Squeeze

Sincerely, Barry O.

I’ve had more new leads from Twitter in the last month than from any other single source of social marketing traffic that I’ve ever tried!

I think the real value of Twitter for me has been the ability to create dialogue with my followers … which in turn has led to more sales.

Twitter has also been my top social traffic source lately.

    Barry,
I’m similarly stumped by Twitter. I really DON’T care that some IM guru is on his way to a movie or having a BBQ with friends. Unfortunately, that’s how most IMers use the service.
I think there’s a future there if you keep the content meaningful and relevant to your readers or as a more immediate notification service.
No doubt that a large list on Twitter will become (or is) valuable.
But the question is: why are they there? And how are you serving them so they want to stay?
I’m sure Rick’s program is right on with respect to this.
Keep up the good wisdom, Barry. You, too, Rick!

As with most Web 2.0 sites I don’t think intent, in the mind of the user, is as much of a factor as it is with search engine marketing. In other words when a person goes to a Web 2.0 site they are much less likely to have a specific reason or intent unlike someone who is searching on Google. Many Web 2.0 site users are just kind of hanging out, seeing what’s new and checking out whatever grabs their attention.

While affinity obviously plays a large roll in why and how people interact on Web 2.0 sites you don’t have to be, nor do I think you always should be, as narrowly focused as you would be for search engine marketing.

Most Web 2.0 site users are in it for the connection, community or cause. They can smell marketers a mile away. If they sense that a users intentions are less than genuine or sincere they most likely won’t interact with that user.
