Gettin' Geeky Wit It

Here's a little news for those of you who lean towards the geeky side.
If you've been doing business online for any period of time you probably already know the importance of selecting the proper keywords for your web site and Internet marketing campaigns. What if you could know the actual intent of the person who is typing your target keywords into the search engines? That would be pretty cool wouldn't it? I thought so.
Microsoft, of all people, came out with a little tool that will gauge the commercial intent of any given search phrase or web site. You can check it out for yourself here… http://adlab.msn.com/Online-Commercial-Intention/Default.aspx
Today some real geeks who created this script, write algorithms and do all sorts of other wacky things released a report of their initial findings. They claim that "the results demonstrate a 90% accuracy rate."
Their stated motivation for this research…
-
- Serving ads will be more effective and less annoying, when user has intent to purchase
- We are interested in detecting web pages / queries that show intention to commit a commercial activity (purchase, rent, bid, or sell…)
The first motivation could be very useful to Internet marketers and especially those who run PPC (Pay-Per-Click) campaigns. You can spend less money by eliminating those keywords from your list that actually annoy people instead of motivate them to buy.
The second one seems like it's more useful for Microsoft's internal use than anything. You conspiracy theorists should have a blast with that one.
You can view their report here in PDF, HTML and even Power Point. http://www2006.org/programme/item.php?id=6016
In all seriousness, if you spend any money on PPC ads you owe it to yourself to check out this tool, read their findings and continue to follow their research.
