I came across a very interesting article today written by Jacob Cass on Daily Blogging Tips
In it Jacob talks about four keys to good blog/web design. Having been in the web design business for 13 years I can tell you that most people do not apply these very simple web design principles and as a result their websites suffer.
Actually, the website owner suffers because very few things will drive away website viewers faster than poor design.
C.R.A.P stands for…
- Contrast
- Repetition
- Alignment
- Proximity
Fortunately, using a CSS driven design, like those found in WordPress themes, makes it much easier to adhere to these principles.
You can read his article here. I think you'll get a lot out of it.

Thanks for the link love and I agree CRAP is very important.
It also takes a bit of experimenting as well, especially when you are creating a unique design. So if you are trying to create a design and it doesn't adhere to the principles right away, just keep working at it. And sometimes you can break the guidelines if you know how in order to create an interesting design, but don't go and break every single one or you will lose the effect.

Vinh,
You're right. It's like all rules you usually end up having to at least bend a few to get exactly what you need. But, I thought your list was a really good starting point. Especially since a lot of people don't even have a clue when it comes to design.
